Partnering with Australian Green Clean and waste contractor Remondis, the Royal Adelaide Show experienced one of its cleanest years yet with a staggering 99% of waste diverted from landfill.
The 2024 event was the third year of implementing a three-bin front of house system for patrons, and five-bin back of house system. In doing so it achieved its best result since the commencement of the initiative in 2022.
Producing a total of 804 tonnes of waste, 797 tonnes was diverted from landfill and 582 tonnes was reused to make compostable material. Overall, this led to a 99-tonne reduction of waste compared to the 2023 event.
Royal Adelaide Show Coordinator Ross Hocking said “Our strong partnerships with our waste contractors and a desire to implement measures to minimise contamination were crucial in achieving waste reduction goals. Furthermore, SA’s legislated bans on single-use plastic, the Royal Show’s requirement to use compostable packaging for food and beverage, and the increasing desire or Show patrons, exhibitors, contractors, volunteers, and staff to be sustainably responsible, helped us achieve the phenomenal result.”
The event’s future looks even cleaner with the vision to continue to meet a 99% diversion of waste from landfill.
